Pay taxes: You are required to file taxes on your worldwide income if you are considered a resident for tax purposes.
-
Abide by Canadian laws: You must comply with all federal, provincial, and municipal laws.
*Even if you don't meet the residency obligation, you will stay a PR until an official decision is made on your status.

-
An officer determines you are no longer a PR after an inquiry or PRTD appeal following a refusal
-
You voluntarily renounce your PR status.
-
You become a Canadian citizen.
-
You become inadmissible to Canada (for example, following the commission of a serious crime).
-
A removal order is issued against you and comes into force.
However, your PR status does not expire when your PR card does. You still hold PR status but will need to renew your card.
Yes, once you have been a Permanent Resident for at least 1,095 days (3 years) out of the past 5 years and meet other eligibility criteria, such as language skills and knowledge of Canada, you can apply for Canadian citizenship. Time spent in Canada as a temporary resident may also count towards this requirement in certain circumstances.
