A Canadian study permit is a document that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. If your program lasts longer than six months, you will need a study permit to legally pursue your education in Canada. For programs of six months or less, a study permit is not required, though it may still be recommended in certain situations.
Processing times for study permits vary depending on factors like the country from which you are applying and the time of year. On average, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. It is important to check the current estimated processing times on the IRCC website.
Yes, most international students with a valid study permit can work up to 24 hours per week during regular academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks, such as summer or winter holidays. This is permitted without the need for a separate work permit as long as you are enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI) and meet other eligibility criteria.
In some cases, your spouse or common-law partner may be eligible for an open work permit, and your dependent children may be eligible for study permits or visitor visas, depending on their age and the duration of your study permit. IRCC has recently updated the eligibility criteria for spouses of international students seeking an open work permit. For your spouse to qualify, you must be:

-
studying in a master’s degree program of 16 months or longer
-
studying in a doctoral degree program
-
participating in an eligible program, or
-
studying in a listed eligible professional degree programs at a university.
Yes, you can apply to extend your study permit before it expires. If you apply before the expiration date, you may continue studying under the same conditions of your current permit, benefiting from "implied status" until a decision is made. However, if your study permit expires without submitting an extension application, you must stop studying immediately. You may still restore your status by applying within 90 days of expiration, but if this window is missed, you will need to leave Canada and reapply from outside the country.
